The Kid's Community Guide was created as a service to the community by the parents of Woodland Montessori School of Harrisonburg, Inc. Our goal was to create a comprehensive listing of all of the fun, interesting, and educational activities that there are to do with young children in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia. The guide is free and contains both activities that can be found within the city and county limits, as well as some wonderful treasures outside our city and county borders that were just too wonderful to pass up! All activities listed are within an hour drive of Harrisonburg.
Let this guide serve as your inspiration to go on many wonderful family outings, for, as educator Maria Montessori explained, it is important for children to explore the world around them in as many ways as possible. "Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and, when the grass of the meadows is damp with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning as it wakes every creature that divides its day between waking and sleeping." (The Discovery of the Child, 1912.)
